Is the 2026 Land Rover Defender P425 the Sweet Spot of the Range?
If you own a Land Rover Defender, or you’re thinking about buying one, you’ve
probably spent a fair amount of time looking at the engine options. The Defender
range can be a bit overwhelming at first glance, with multiple powertrains, body
styles, and trim levels to get your head around. One model that’s been generating a
lot of conversation lately is the 2026 Land Rover Defender P425. And from what we’ve seen, it’s
well worth your attention.
What is the 2026 Land Rover Defender P425?
The P425 uses Land Rover’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, the same unit that
has powered some of the most enjoyable versions of the Defender (and Range
Rover Sport, and Jaguar F-Type) over the years. In the P425, that engine produces
425hp and 406lb ft of torque, which is enough to get the Defender 90 from 0-62mph
in 5.3 seconds.
That supercharged V8 note is a big part of the appeal here. There’s a reason people
have loved this engine for years, it sounds brilliant, it responds instantly to the
throttle, and it turns what is, at heart, a very capable off-roader into something
genuinely entertaining on a country road.
How Does it Compare to the P500 and the OCTA?
You might be wondering whether it’s worth stepping up to the more powerful P500 or
P525 variants – or going the whole way to the flagship Defender OCTA. Here’s the
honest answer: for most people driving on real roads, the P425 is arguably the better
choice.
The OCTA is a very different machine, it runs a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-
turbocharged V8 producing 635hp, a heavily upgraded suspension system, and a
price tag starting at around £148,000. It’s an extraordinary vehicle, but it’s also a
specialist one.
The P425, by contrast, sits on the Defender’s standard air suspension, which
actually suits the V8 character very well. The slightly lower power output compared
to the P500 (which produces 523hp) actually works in the P425’s favour on public
roads, you get all the excitement without feeling like you’re constantly holding the car
back.
The Price Argument, and Why It Matters
One of the most compelling things about the P425 is where it sits in the Defender
pricing structure. In 90 form, the P425 is available in the mid-tier X-Dynamic SE trim,
with a starting price of £72,725. That’s not cheap, of course – but compare it to the
range-topping V8 trim required to get the P525, and you’re looking at a saving of
around £41,000.
In real-world driving, the difference in performance between a P425 and a P525 is
unlikely to be something most owners ever actually feel. Both are fast. Both sound
magnificent. Both have that same addictive throttle response. The P425 simply costs
considerably less to put on your drive.
What About Running Costs?
We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention fuel economy. The P425 returns
around 20mpg on the WLTP cycle, and CO2 emissions sit at 321g/km. That’s not
going to win any awards for efficiency… The diesel D350 is a far more sensible
option if running costs are your primary concern.
But if you’re considering a V8 Defender in the first place, you’ve likely already made
your peace with that. The question is whether the V8 experience justifies the extra
cost over a diesel, and for many Defender enthusiasts, the answer is a clear yes.
One practical thing worth noting: with a supercharged V8 under the bonnet, it’s
especially important to keep up with servicing. These engines love clean oil and
properly maintained cooling systems. Keeping on top of service intervals will protect
both the engine and the value of your investment.
Should You Buy One?
The 2026 Defender P425 makes a strong case for itself. It’s the most accessible way
into a V8 Defender, it offers genuinely exciting performance without the extremes of
the OCTA, and it’s available in the 90 body style… which many people feel is the
best-looking Defender of all.
There’s also a sense of urgency here. The supercharged 5.0-litre V8 has been on
borrowed time for years, with tightening emissions regulations on the horizon, it’s
hard to say how much longer Land Rover will be able to offer it. If you’ve ever
wanted a V8 Defender, 2026 might be the time to act.
