Home Blog: How to Keep Your Car Clean and Coronavirus-Free
󰀄

The Coronavirus is a serious risk to all and so, steps need to be taken to reduce the spread of the infection. Whilst reduced travel is advised, people still need to use their cars to pick up food and medical supplies and to commute to work if they’re key workers.

In times such as this, it’s important to take precautions and keep your car as clean as your home for your safety, as well as the safety of others. Take a look at the steps you can take to help keep your car clean and Coronavirus-free.

Wash your hands

It’s important that you wash your hands thoroughly both before you get in the car and after you’ve got out the car. This should help to minimise the risk of transferring germs from your hands into your home or car.

Wipe down keys and doors

Take the time to wipe down your front door handle, your car handles (both interior and exterior) and your car keys. These are high-touch surfaces so they’re more likely to be contaminated with germs.

Wipe down the interior of your car

Wherever your hands come into contact with your car, these areas should be wiped down with anti-bacterial spray or disinfectant wipes every day your car is driven.

These areas include:

  • The steering wheel
  • The gear stick
  • The hand brake
  • The indicators
  • Switches, buttons and screens
  • Seat belts
  • Door handles

It’s also a good idea to deep clean your seats. However, before using any cleaning products on your car, remember to read your car’s manual to ensure you don’t damage the interior surfaces. This is particularly important if your car has a leather interior as certain cleaners can lead to the deterioration of the leather.

Vacuum regularly

If your car is still being used, it’s best to vacuum the interior of your car regularly. Make sure you vacuum the carpets, floor mats and seats to help reduce the spread of germs.

Clean car seats, foldable tables and toys

If you have children travelling in your car, disinfect their car seat before returning it to your car. Foldable tables in the rear of your car are also germ-prone so these should be thoroughly wiped down, along with your children’s toys, which should have washing instructions on the labels.

Keep sanitising products in your car

To ensure you’re really prepared, it’s a good idea to keep a small hand sanitiser and a pack of anti-bacterial wipes in the glove box of your car. These are ideal to sanitise your hands and for a quick wipe down of high-touch areas.

You could also keep a few pairs of disposable gloves in your car, which you can put on when you fill your car up with fuel or when you’re going to the shops.
