As well as being a real-life action hero, the Land Rover is also a veteran movie star. According to IMCDB (the Internet Movie Cars Database) Land Rover models have appeared in literally hundreds of movies and TV shows! While it’s hard to pick a favourite, we’ve listed some of the most notable movie moments for our favourite 4×4. Here’s our ultimate top 5 rundown.
The Land Rover Defender TD5 110 was specially customised for the Tomb Raider movie, where it’s driven by Angelina Jolie as videogame heroine Lara Croft. Tasked with depicting a virtual reality adventure in live action, the Land Rover was the obvious choice of car. Notable extra features of Lara’s model include diamond plate trimming and an underwater snorkel – for some seriously adventurous off-road action.
2. Judge Dredd (1995)
Here’s the Land Rover as you’ve never seen it before! This unique model, which stars as the distinctive yellow ‘City Cab’ in the film, is built upon a 101 Forward Control chassis – a vehicle that was produced in the 1970s for the British Army. The hefty City Cab was designed to be robust enough to withstand the futuristic demands of its 22nd century passengers. (If any vehicle manufacturer is set to survive the next century, we agree it’s likely to be Land Rover!)
3. The Italian Job (1969)
The Italian Job is a quintessentially English, classic movie. And it features some classic British cars, too. Top of the list in most people’s minds will be the Mini Cooper, which steals the show with its stylish and nippy appearance. But alongside the Mini, the Land Rover is a central part of the action. The gang’s Series IIA Station Wagon allows them to navigate the backstreets of Turin before making off in Minis with their loot.
4. Get Carter (1971)
The Land Rover appears in many movies, but here’s one that gets maximum use out of the vehicle! The same Land Rover model actually appears in two separate scenes of this iconic film, driven by different protagonists. Throughout the movie, the 1958 Land Rover 109 Series II Station Wagon is put through its paces by criminals chasing after Michael Caine’s gangster, Jack Carter. But later, a police raid is carried out using the same Land Rover to catch crime boss Cyril Kinnear.
5. Spectre (2015)
For this impressive James Bond movie, the Land Rover Defender SVX was given a dramatic makeover. With massive, 37-inch tyres, extra power and improved suspension, this double cab pick-up truck was engineered to negotiate a car chase in the Austrian Alps. Of course, Spectre isn’t the first James Bond film to feature a Land Rover in a starring role. 2012’s Skyfall sees Naomie Harris driving a Land Rover Defender Double Cab, and the Range Rover also makes appearances in Octopussy, The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
